Why are Blue Eyes More Sensitive to Sunlight and UV Light?

Just like burning your skin, you can experience a variety of symptoms with an eye sunburn. So it’s important to be careful. Brown eyes have much more melanin, which has pigments that will protect against bright lighting. Blue eyes do contain much less of this pigment in the front layer of the iris, making them more translucent. So since there is less pigment, the blue eyes are more sensitive to sunlight and bright artificial lighting. This can also cause blue-eyed people to be more susceptible to glare, leading to light sensitivity, also known as photophobia. Blue eyes may also water more in bright light as they are more sensitive. Make sure to wear those sunglasses and limit bright light exposure if you have blue eyes! Corneal damage, macular degeneration and cataracts are all possible chronic side affects from UV exposure and can unfortunately lead to decreased vision. The eyelid skin is the thinnest skin of the whole body. UV damage induces dryness, wrinkles, accentuated skin furrows, sagging, loss of elasticity and mottled pigmentation. Yes, sun damage can have sad consequences for your eye health, but it's not always permanent. Your eyes can heal if the only damage your eyes sustained is mild photokeratitis, which will eventually diminish after a short period of time with immediate limited exposure to UV light. Having blue eyes has its advantages, for example they lower your risk of developing cataracts. However, they might increase your risk of health problems like type 1 diabetes and eye cancer.
